SMART fragt die Fehlerstatistik ab, die von modernen IDE-Festplatten automatisch geführt wird. Verschlechtern sich die Werte, gibt das BIOS eine Warnmeldung aus. So lassen sich drohende Ausfälle frühzeitig erkennen und eventuell noch Datensicherungen vornehmen.
